Is There a Connection Between Sinusitis and Asthma?

June 10, 2021

Sinusitis and asthma tampa

Living with a chronic condition like asthma or sinusitis is frustrating. Experiencing a combination of both only compounds the problem, leaving you feeling miserable.

If this sounds familiar, you are not alone. Studies report a direct connection between sinusitis and asthma. There are many treatments for this condition, known as the “Unified Airway.”

What is Asthma?

Asthma is a chronic condition that causes inflammation in the airways. An asthma attack can happen at any time and without warning.  Infections, allergens, and irritants can trigger attacks.

Common symptoms of asthma include:

  • Wheezing
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Coughing
  • Tightness in the chest

Symptoms can last anywhere from minutes to days, depending upon the severity.

What is Sinusitis?

Sinusitis is the medical term for inflammation of the sinus cavity. This inflammation causes a buildup of mucus and blockage of the passageways.

Common symptoms of sinusitis include:

  • Pain in nose, forehead, and cheeks
  • Yellow or green mucus
  • Loss of smell
  • Nasal blockage
  • Fever
  • Tooth pain

If left untreated, sinusitis can last for weeks or even months. Allergies, infections, or a compromised immune system are the most common triggers.  Sinusitis and nasal inflammation can trigger a flare of asthma as well.

Treatment Options for Asthma and Sinusitis

Before coming up with a treatment plan, you must first identify the source of the problem. Acute cases are often cleared up with rest and over-the-counter medications.

If the symptoms continue for longer than a week, it is time to see a specialist. Acute or chronic sinusitis may require a round of antibiotics to knock out the infection.

An allergist can help identify the root cause of your condition. Our specialists can use this knowledge to come up with a treatment plan. This plan will include both short-term and preventative treatments.

Don’t let your asthma or sinusitis symptoms get you down. Contact the team at Allergy Tampa today for a comprehensive treatment plan.
