Winter Allergens to Watch for in Florida

October 10, 2021

While winter might bring thoughts of evening bonfires and warm coffee to mind for some, many Tampa Bay residents may experience warmer weather until December or January. Identifying the cause of winter allergies is the key to avoiding them, so we’ve compiled a quick list of the most common winter allergens to look out for here on the Gulf coast:

  • Ragweed and Grasses

Ragweed is a primary cause of fall and winter allergies, mainly due to our extended growing season here in Florida. Local grasses, like Bahia and Bermuda, can also pollinate year-round in central Florida. Keeping your lawn cut and weeds under control is the best way to prevent ragweed and grass allergies in and around your home, but that won’t stop you from being exposed when out in the community. An over-the-counter (OTC) or prescription allergy treatment may be required if you are sensitive to these allergens.

  • Mold

Mold is another common cause of winter allergies in Florida. With so much moisture in our air, it’s no wonder mold loves to grow in any dark, damp crevice it can find. Fixing any leaks and removing other sources of moisture is the best way to handle mold issues. Using a dehumidifier, fans, or central AC can also be beneficial for high-humidity areas of your home.

  • Dust

We’ve never met anyone who loved to be covered in dust, but for some people, it can be extremely irritating. Dust your home regularly to prevent accumulation, and wear a mask if needed. Vacuum carpets frequently and consider covers for your bedding if you have a dust allergy.

  • Pets

Pets can be great companions and boost your mood, but they can also bring on severe allergies or asthma attacks due to the dust, pollen, dander, and other particles that love to cling to their fur. Regular bathing and grooming is the best way to keep pet allergens at bay.

Are winter allergies making your life miserable? Well, don’t suffer any longer! At Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology Associates of Tampa Bay, we have the experience and resources needed to identify your triggers and get your allergies under control. Allergen immunotherapy can reduce your symptoms around common allergens. Call us at (813) 971-9743 or request an appointment online today.
