How Tree Pollen Causes Allergic Rhinitis and Conjunctivitis

February 10, 2019

Allergic RhinitisIf you are new to Florida, you may be surprised to have some seasonal allergy symptoms as early as January or February. Certain allergic problems, such as allergic rhinitis and allergic conjunctivitis, are brought on by the presence of pollen or other allergens in the air.  The amount and type of pollen in the air changes with the seasons and  spring in Florida can start as early as the end of January. If you have allergy symptoms this time of year, you may be allergic to tree pollen.

What is Allergic Rhinitis?

Allergic rhinitis is often referred to as hay fever. It is caused by  inflammation of the nose due to allergens. Your nose and sinuses may swell and mucous production can increase causing runny or stuffy nose, postnasal drip, sneezing, itchy nose, and other symptoms. Allergic rhinitis may be caused by  to  grass or weed pollens, animal dander, nad/or dust mites, but tree pollen is a major culprit during the spring in Florida.

What is Allergic Conjunctivitis?

Allergic conjunctivitis refers to eye symptoms from allergens including itching, tearing, redness, and mild swelling. . Often, patients experience rhinitis and conjunctivitis at the same time, but this is not always the case. If you currently have  eye irritation and watering without nasal symptoms, it could be due to tree pollen n the air.

Diagnosing Allergic Rhinitis and Conjunctivitis

If you are experiencing  some of the above symptoms right now, it could be a reaction to the tree pollen or other allergens. An allergy and immunology specialist can perform the necessary allergy testing to to determine exactly which allergens are causing your symptoms. Once a diagnosis has been made, our experienced staff can offer a variety of treatment options to make you more comfortable.

What You Can Do

There are a few things you can do to seek some relief while you are waiting for your appointment. You can attempt to control symptoms with over the counter allergy medications. Limiting your exposure to tree pollen by staying indoors or away from tree-lined areas as much as possible may help. Frequent vacuuming and dusting of your home can also limit  your exposure to pollens that may have made their way inside through the doors or windows.

Whether you suffer from symptoms due to tree pollen or other allergens, the reputable, board-certified physicians at Allergy Tampa are here to help.  Our goal is to provide cost-effective and comprehensive care for those suffering from allergies with our full-service allergy testing. Call Allergy Tampa today at 813-971-9743 to make your appointment.
