Hurricane Season & Your Allergies: Preventing Mold Growth After Storms

Late August marks the height of Atlantic hurricane season, and for Tampa Bay residents, that means more than just tracking storm paths and stocking up on supplies. Heavy rain, flooding, and power outages that often follow a significant storm create ideal conditions for mold growth, which can turn into a lingering allergy and asthma problem long after the weather clears.

Why Storms Create a Mold Risk

Mold needs moisture to grow, and hurricanes and tropical storms provide it in abundance. Flooding, roof leaks, and water intrusion around windows or doors can introduce moisture into places it doesn’t normally reach. Power outages compound the problem by shutting down air conditioning systems that would otherwise keep indoor humidity in check, allowing mold to establish itself within as little as 24 to 48 hours in the right conditions.

Unlike a slow, gradual mold problem that develops over weeks, storm-related mold can spread quickly and extensively, particularly in walls, carpeting, insulation, and furniture that have absorbed water, and it is a common contributor to chronic sinusitis flare-ups.

Signs of Mold After a Storm

Mold growth isn’t always obvious, especially if it develops inside walls or under flooring. Watch for:

  • A musty or earthy odor, even in areas that appear dry
  • Visible discoloration on walls, ceilings, or baseboards
  • Warped or bubbling paint, drywall, or flooring
  • Worsening allergy or asthma symptoms after returning to a home that experienced flooding or water intrusion
  • Symptoms that improve when away from the house and return upon coming back

Protecting Your Health During Storm Recovery

If your home experiences flooding or water damage, prompt action makes a real difference in preventing significant mold growth:

  • Remove standing water as quickly as possible and thoroughly dry affected areas within 24 to 48 hours if you can safely do so
  • Run dehumidifiers and fans once power is restored to speed up drying
  • Discard porous materials that stayed wet for an extended period, including carpeting, drywall, and upholstered furniture that can’t be fully dried
  • Wear a mask and gloves when cleaning up water-damaged areas, particularly if you have asthma or mold sensitivity
  • Have HVAC systems inspected before running them again if they were exposed to floodwater, since mold can spread through ductwork

When Professional Help Is Needed

Not every situation is a do-it-yourself job. Extensive flooding, mold covering large surface areas, or mold in HVAC systems typically requires professional remediation. For asthma and allergy patients in particular, avoiding direct contact with significant mold growth is important, since exposure during cleanup can trigger a serious flare.

Managing Symptoms After Storm Exposure

If you’ve noticed new or worsening allergy and asthma symptoms following a storm, it’s worth having those symptoms evaluated rather than assuming they’ll resolve on their own. Mold exposure can continue to affect sensitive patients well after visible cleanup is complete, particularly if moisture remains trapped somewhere in the home.
