Thunderstorm Asthma: How Florida’s Summer Storms Can Trigger Attacks

Anyone who’s spent a summer in Tampa Bay knows the daily rhythm: sunny mornings giving way to dramatic afternoon thunderstorms almost like clockwork. While these storms are a normal part of Florida life, they can pose a real risk for people managing asthma. A phenomenon known as thunderstorm asthma has been linked to spikes in emergency room visits during and immediately after storms, and understanding why can help patients stay safer during peak storm season.

What Is Thunderstorm Asthma?

Thunderstorm asthma occurs when weather conditions cause pollen grains and mold spores to break apart into much smaller particles. Under normal conditions, these particles are too large to travel deep into the lungs. But the combination of high winds, humidity, and the rapid pressure changes that come with a storm can rupture pollen and mold particles into microscopic fragments that are easily inhaled and can trigger a more severe asthma or allergy response than the original, larger particles would have caused.

This effect tends to be strongest in the window just before a storm hits, when winds pick up and gust ahead of the rain, and immediately afterward, as the air stirs up allergens that had settled on grass, trees, and other surfaces.

Why This Matters More in Tampa Bay

Florida’s rainy season brings frequent, often daily, thunderstorms from roughly June through September. Combined with high pollen and mold levels already present in the region during these months, that adds up to a lot of potential trigger events for asthma patients. People who don’t normally think of themselves as having severe asthma can still experience a noticeable flare during or after a significant storm.

Recognizing the Signs

Symptoms associated with thunderstorm asthma are similar to a typical asthma flare but can come on more suddenly and feel more intense:

  • Rapid onset of wheezing or chest tightness around the time of a storm
  • Shortness of breath that worsens quickly
  • Increased coughing, particularly a dry, persistent cough
  • Symptoms that seem disproportionate to typical triggers

How to Protect Yourself During Storm Season

  • Keep rescue inhalers accessible at all times during the summer months, not just when symptoms are already present.
  • Monitor local weather alerts and try to stay indoors with windows closed as storms approach, particularly during the initial gusty period before rain begins.
  • Run air conditioning rather than opening windows to avoid drawing in storm-disturbed allergens.
  • Follow your asthma action plan closely during peak storm season, including any controller medications prescribed for daily use.
  • Track symptom patterns around storm activity and share them with your physician.

Staying Ahead of Summer Flares
