How Florida’s Climate Affects Chronic Cough and Allergies

July 20, 2025

Living in Florida often means dealing with a persistent tickle in your throat or a cough that just won’t quit. You might blame it on a lingering cold, but in a state known for its year-round greenery and soupy humidity, the true culprit is often the air you breathe every day. That stubborn cough and constant congestion can be your body’s response to Florida’s unique and challenging climate.

The Alliance of Humidity and Allergens

Our state’s subtropical climate creates a perfect storm for respiratory issues. It’s a two-pronged attack:

  1. Never-Ending Pollen: Unlike places with four distinct seasons, Florida’s plants are on a nearly continuous blooming schedule. Oak and pine pollen in the spring give way to grass pollen in the summer, followed by ragweed in the fall. This means your allergy symptoms don’t get a break, leading to chronic inflammation of your airways.
  2. Oppressive Humidity: The heavy, moist air does more than just make it feel hotter. High humidity creates an ideal breeding ground for indoor allergens like mold and dust mites. It also thickens the mucus in your nose and throat, leading to post-nasal drip—a primary trigger for a chronic cough. This constant irritation can leave your throat feeling scratchy and make you feel like you constantly need to clear it.

Is It a Cough or Is It Allergies?

In Florida, the line between a chronic cough and allergies is often blurred because they are deeply connected. A persistent, dry cough that lasts for weeks or months is frequently a symptom of allergies or asthma. The constant drainage from your sinuses irritates the throat, leading to a reflexive cough. If your cough is accompanied by other tell-tale allergy symptoms like an itchy throat, sneezing, and a runny nose—but no fever or body aches—allergies are the likely cause.

Steps for At-Home Relief

Gaining control over your environment can significantly reduce your symptoms.

  • Master Your Indoor Air: Use a dehumidifier to keep indoor humidity below 50% to discourage mold and dust mites. High-efficiency (HEPA) air filters are essential for trapping pollen, mold spores, and other airborne irritants. Remember to change them regularly.
  • Time Your Outings: Check local pollen counts and try to limit your time outdoors when they are at their peak. Keep windows closed at home and in the car.
  • Wash It Away: Pollen clings to your clothes, skin, and hair. Make it a habit to shower and change your clothes after spending extended time outside.

When Your Best Efforts Aren’t Enough

If you’ve tried everything at home and are still struggling with a cough that won’t go away or unrelenting allergy symptoms, it’s time to seek professional help. Guessing which allergen is responsible can be a frustrating and fruitless game in a place with so many potential triggers. A board-certified allergist can perform precise testing to get to the root of the problem.
