Why Summer Brings an Increase in Mold Allergies in Florida

June 25, 2025

For many, summer in Florida is a celebrated season of sunshine and beach days. But for those with mold allergies, it can signal the start of relentless sneezing, congestion, and itchy eyes. The very elements that define our summer—the heat, afternoon rain, and stifling humidity—also create the perfect breeding ground for mold, turning both outdoor and indoor spaces into a source of misery.

Florida’s Climate: A Perfect Storm for Mold

Mold is a fungus that thrives on three things: moisture, warmth, and organic material. Unfortunately, the Florida summer serves up all three in abundance. The combination of high heat and frequent rain showers drives humidity levels up, often well above the 60% mark which encourages mold growth. This moisture allows mold spores, which are always present in the air, to settle and multiply on any suitable surface, from fallen leaves outdoors to damp areas in your home.

While outdoor molds flourish in shady, damp areas, indoor mold is a significant concern. Everyday activities like showering and cooking can add moisture to the air, while leaks and condensation in poorly ventilated areas like bathrooms, kitchens, and basements create hidden havens for mold.

Are Your Symptoms a Mold Allergy?

It’s easy to mistake a mold allergy for another summer ailment. Because mold spores are airborne, they can trigger symptoms similar to other respiratory allergies. Key signs of a mold allergy include:

  • Sneezing, a runny nose, or nasal congestion.
  • Itchy, watery eyes.
  • An itchy nose and throat.
  • Coughing and postnasal drip.
  • A musty or earthy odor in certain rooms.

For individuals with asthma, inhaling mold spores can also trigger coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. If your symptoms seem to worsen in damp spaces or after spending time outdoors on a humid day, a mold allergy could be the culprit.

Proactive Steps for a Mold-Free Home

You can’t control Florida’s weather, but you can take steps to minimize mold in your living space. The key is to control moisture.

  1. Keep It Dry: Use a dehumidifier to maintain indoor humidity levels below 50%. Ensure your air conditioner is draining properly and consider having the system professionally maintained.
  2. Fix Leaks Promptly: Check under sinks and around windows for any signs of water intrusion and repair leaks immediately. Even small amounts of water can lead to mold growth in as little as 24 to 48 hours.
  3. Ventilate Properly: Use exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens to move moisture outside. Make sure your clothes dryer vents to the outdoors.
  4. Clean Smart: Regularly clean areas prone to moisture with a detergent or soap and water solution. If you see visible mold, wear gloves and a mask during cleanup.
