Indoor vs. Outdoor Fall Allergies: What You Need to Know

November 20, 2024

While spring is the season that is typically associated with allergies, fall can be just as problematic, especially here in Florida where allergens can thrive year-round in the mild climate. Because of this, allergens both inside and outside contribute to discomfort here in the Sunshine State. If you’re experiencing allergy symptoms in the autumn months and can’t figure out what’s causing them, continue reading to find out more about the most common indoor and outdoor allergens you’ll encounter in Tampa Bay.

Fall Indoor Allergies

Once the temperature outside begins to fall, we start spending more time inside. However, being shut up inside with doors and windows closed can trigger indoor allergies, including:

  • Dust Mites – microscopic pests that are often found in household dust and thrive in warm, humid environments
  • Pet Dander – All pets release dander from their fur, so more time inside with your furry friends will increase your exposure
  • Mold – Damp bathrooms, kitchens, and basements make the perfect home for mold, which will release spores into the air that circulate around your entire home.

Fall Outdoor Allergies

Outdoor allergies plague Floridians year-round, with the most common ones we see being:

  • Ragweed Pollen – Begins pollinating in August and can last throughout November and beyond
  • Mold – Florida’s warm, humid climate makes mold grow prolifically, sending spores from coast to coast

Common Allergy Symptoms

Fall allergies present symptoms similar to those in other seasons but can be particularly persistent due to continuous exposure to allergens. These include:

  • Runny nose, watery eyes, sneezing
  • Nasal congestion and snoring
  • Itchy eyes, nose, throat
  • Swollen and dark circles under the eyes
  • Cough
  • Facial pressure

What to Do if You Have Allergy Symptoms

If you’re experiencing any of the symptoms listed above, seeing a qualified allergist as soon as possible is important to get a proper diagnosis. Your allergist will conduct allergy testing to determine your specific triggers, and then work with you to develop an allergy treatment plan that includes avoiding triggers, medications, and lifestyle changes.
