What You Need to Know About Fall and Winter Allergies

December 19, 2023

Fall and winter allergies in central Florida are quite different from most other parts of the U.S. While many associate allergies with the spring season, fall and winter can be equally troublesome here in Florida’s subtropical climate. While the rest of the country is battling cold weather indoor allergies, we get no reprieve from the outdoor allergens while the indoor triggers start popping up as well!

Understanding Fall and Winter Allergies

Seasonal allergies during the cooler months are primarily driven by ragweed pollen and mold spores. In Florida, ragweed begins pollinating in August and can continue into November or beyond, exacerbated by the state’s temperate climate. These allergens can trigger allergic rhinitis, also known as hay fever, which affects one in every four Americans.

Common Symptoms

Fall and winter allergies present symptoms similar to those in other seasons but can be particularly persistent due to continuous exposure to allergens. These include:

  • Runny nose, watery eyes, sneezing
  • Nasal congestion and snoring
  • Itchy eyes, nose, throat
  • Swollen and dark circles under the eyes
  • Cough
  • Facial pressure

The Importance of Proper Diagnosis and Treatment

At Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Associates of Tampa Bay, we emphasize the importance of a thorough examination and allergy testing to accurately identify your specific triggers. Our board-certified allergy/immunology specialists will create a personalized treatment plan for you, which may include nasal medications, antihistamines, decongestants, and other medications. In cases where lifestyle changes and medications aren’t quite enough, allergen immunotherapy (allergy shots) may be recommended, depending on your specific case and needs.
