Signs of Anaphylactic Shock

November 10, 2023

Anaphylaxis is a severe, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction that can occur rapidly after exposure to an allergen. At Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Associates of Tampa Bay, we understand the importance of recognizing the signs and symptoms of anaphylactic shock to ensure immediate and appropriate medical intervention.

Understanding Anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis is an overreaction of the body’s immune system to substances that it mistakenly identifies as harmful. This exaggerated response can cause a sudden drop in blood pressure and narrow the airways, leading to a shock that is both dangerous and frightening. The culprits can be foods, insect stings, medications, or even latex.

Recognizing the Early Signs

The onset of anaphylaxis can be swift and severe, so it’s crucial to recognize the early signs:

  • Skin Reactions
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Flushing
    • Pale skin
  • Swelling of the:
    • Lips
    • Tongue
    • Throat
    • Other parts of the body
  • Breathing Difficulties
    • Wheezing
    • Nasal congestion
    • Trouble breathing
  • Gastrointestinal Symptoms
    • Nausea
    • Vomiting
    • Diarrhea
    • Abdominal pain

Identifying Severe Symptoms

When anaphylactic shock is occurring, more severe symptoms will follow:

  • Respiratory Distress
    • Severe shortness of breath
    • Stridor
    • Tight feeling in the chest
    • Airway constriction
  • Cardiovascular Symptoms
    • A significant drop in blood pressure
    • Weakness
    • Fainting
    • Rapid heart rate
  • Mental Confusion
    • Dizziness
    • Confusion
    • Sense of doom
    • Reduced blood flow to the brain

Taking Immediate Action

If you or someone you are with starts to exhibit signs of anaphylaxis, immediate action is necessary:

  1. Emergency Medical Treatment: Administer an epinephrine injection if available and call emergency services immediately.
  2. Remain Calm: While waiting for emergency services, try to remain calm and keep the affected person lying down.
  3. Follow-up: After emergency treatment, follow up with an allergy specialist to identify the allergen and avoid future reactions.
