How Can Allergies Affect My Voice?

October 13, 2023

Allergies are a common concern for many, especially during certain seasons when pollen counts are high. Florida’s fall allergy season is predominantly marked by the presence of ragweed pollen and mold spores. While ragweed usually begins its pollination in August, the process can extend well into November due to the state’s temperate climate. Residents often experience heightened allergy symptoms during this period, making it essential to monitor pollen counts throughout the entire season. While most people are aware of the typical symptoms like sneezing, itching, and watery eyes, not everyone realizes that allergies can also impact the voice. If you’ve ever wondered why your voice sounds hoarse or different during allergy season, you’re not alone.

The Connection Between Allergies and Your Voice

Allergies can influence your voice in various ways. For starters, allergens can irritate and inflame the vocal cords, leading to hoarseness, from post-nasal drip. Post-nasal drip can also worsen acid reflux, which can lead to vocal cord irritation as well. But that’s not all. Even the medicines you take for allergies can affect your voice. Antihistamines, while effective in drying up mucus, can also dry up the protective layer of mucus on your vocal cords. Dry vocal cords can become stiff or inflamed, resulting in a raspy voice.

Protecting Your Voice

To safeguard your voice from allergens:

  1. Avoid allergens and maintain an allergen-free environment at home
  2. Keep windows closed during high pollen times
  3. Wash your sheets in hot water weekly
  4. Regularly vacuum
  5. Use an air filter
  6. Opt for medicines that don’t affect mucus levels. For instance, nasal steroids and nasal antihistamines are preferable as they have a lesser drying effect on the throat and voice.
