Get Prepared for Summer Allergy Symptoms in Florida

May 15, 2023

Summer is the season for sun, fun, and unfortunately, allergies. The warm weather and high humidity levels in Florida can create the perfect breeding ground for allergens like pollen, mold, and dust mites. If you suffer from seasonal allergies, it’s important to prepare yourself for the upcoming season. Here are some tips to help you get prepared for summer allergy symptoms in Florida.

Know Your Triggers

The first step in preparing for summer allergies is to know what triggers your symptoms. For many people, pollen is the main culprit, but mold and dust mites can also cause problems. Once you know your triggers, you can take steps to minimize your exposure to them. You may want to consider talking to an allergist, who can do testing to determine what specific allergens you are allergic to.

Monitor Pollen Counts & Avoid Peak Hours

During the summer months, pollen, particularly grasses and weeds, and mold counts tend to be higher in Florida. Keep an eye on the daily pollen and mold counts in your area, so you can adjust your activities accordingly. Pollen counts also tend to be highest in the morning and early afternoon. If possible, avoid going outside during these hours. If you do need to go outside, try to limit your exposure to allergens.

Keep Your Home Clean

One of the best ways to minimize your exposure to allergens is to keep your home clean. This means vacuuming regularly, washing your bedding in hot water once a week, and using an air purifier. Be sure to also keep your windows and doors closed as much as possible to keep allergens out.

Take Medications as Directed

If you take allergy medications, make sure you take them as directed. This may mean taking them daily, even if you’re not experiencing symptoms. It’s also important to talk to your doctor about adjusting your medication as needed. If you’re experiencing severe symptoms, you may need stronger medication or a different type of treatment, such as immunotherapy.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking plenty of water can help thin out mucus and ease congestion in the airways. Aim to drink at least eight glasses of water a day, and avoid sugary drinks, caffeinated drinks, or alcohol, which can dehydrate you further.

Enjoy the Summer Without Fear of Allergy Symptoms

Summer allergies can be a real pain, but with a little preparation, you can minimize your symptoms and enjoy the season. If your allergies are particularly severe, don’t hesitate to talk to your allergist about your treatment options. If you need an allergist in Tampa Bay, consider making an appointment with Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Associates of Tampa Bay by calling 813-971-9743. By taking steps to manage your allergies, you can have a happy and healthy summer in Florida.
