Why Does it Seem Like My Allergies Are Worse at Night?

April 25, 2023

If you’re one of the millions of Americans who suffer from allergies, you may have noticed that your symptoms seem to worsen at night. This can be frustrating, as it can make it difficult to get a good night’s sleep. In this blog post, we’ll explore why allergies can seem worse at night and what you can do about it.

What are Allergies?

Allergies are a result of your body’s immune system overreacting to a harmless substance, such as pollen or pet dander. When your body comes into contact with an allergen, it produces antibodies that trigger the release of histamine, a chemical that causes inflammation and irritation.

Why Do Allergies Seem Worse at Night?

There are several reasons for this:

  1. Many allergens are more prevalent at night. For example, dust mites and pet dander can accumulate in bedding and pillows, which can make symptoms worse when you lay down to sleep.
  2. Pollen levels tend to be higher in the morning, which means that your symptoms may peak later in the day or at night.
  3. Your body produces more histamine at night, which can make your symptoms feel more severe.
  4. When you’re lying down, mucus can pool in your sinuses and nasal passages, making it more difficult to breathe and increasing your risk of post-nasal drip.

Nighttime Allergy Treatment

So what can you do to alleviate nighttime allergies? There are several strategies that can help. First, make sure that your bedding and pillows are cleaned regularly to minimize the accumulation of allergens. You may also want to consider using allergen-proof covers on your pillows and mattress. It’s also a good idea to keep your bedroom well-ventilated. Using a HEPA air filter can help to remove allergens from the air, and opening windows to promote air circulation can also be helpful.

Finally, if your symptoms are particularly severe, you may want to consider taking medication to alleviate your symptoms. Antihistamines and decongestants can be effective in reducing allergy symptoms, but it’s important to talk to your allergist before starting any new medication.
