Ways to Manage Indoor Winter Allergies

January 13, 2023

are also known as indoor allergies, which are allergic symptoms triggered by allergens primarily located indoors. Indoor allergies are around us all year, but since we usually spend more time indoors during the winter months, that’s when we notice them the most. Some of the most common winter allergy triggers include dust, mold, cockroaches, and pet dander.

While it may be tempting to throw open the windows to try to get some of the allergens out, we don’t suggest you do that. You’ll probably just be letting even more allergens in! Instead, follow our top tips for managing your indoor winter allergies:

Keep Your House Clean

This is the most important tip to follow. A clean house will have much fewer allergens, so keeping your living spaces tidy is very important for managing winter allergies. Pay special attention to keeping dust at bay and thoroughly cleaning areas where pets reside.

Groom Pets Regularly

Grooming removes a lot of the dander present in your pet’s fur along with excessive hair, both of which can cause allergy symptoms. Ask the groomer to thoroughly deshed your dog or cat and to use a non-scented shampoo to avoid further allergy issues.

Go Hypoallergenic

HVAC filters, mattress covers, and pillow covers should all be certified hypoallergenic for the most effective allergen-fighting solution. Be sure to change those HVAC filters as recommended by the manufacturer, and spring for a new mattress and pillow covers annually.

Inspect for Mold

Mold is a slow and silent allergen, building up in cracks and crevices that are out of sight and out of mind. While cleaning, inspect thoroughly for any signs of mold. Focus on areas that are dark and moist, like under sinks and around showers.

Call an Exterminator

Cockroaches are another problem for allergy sufferers since they leave traces of any allergens they’ve picked up everywhere they go. While roach baits from big box stores will work fine for prevention, if you have an active infestation, we always suggest going with a local, reputable exterminator to handle the problem.
