A chronic cough is one that lasts eight weeks or longer. It can impair your feeling of well-being, interfere with your sleep and alienate your friends and colleagues. Diagnosing the etiology of chronic cough can be difficult.

Over the years we have treated many patients with chronic cough. The majority of these patients have chronic cough because of postnasal drip, asthma, allergies or acid reflux. Chronic cough can also be caused by chronic infections, certain anti-hypertensive medications or vocal chord dysfunction.

We begin by obtaining a complete medical history and physical examination to gather important information about your health. This informs us as to the medications you take, your symptoms, your past medical history, social history and general feeling of well-being. Lung function tests, chest x-rays and rhinoscopy will assist in identifying the underlying cause of your cough.

Once the cause of your cough is identified, a carefully planned treatment program will be recommended. This can include:

  • Antihistamine, decongestant, nasal medications
  • Lifestyle changes
  • Allergen immunotherapy (allergy shots)

  • Elimination of the underlying cause, such as chronic sinusitis or acid reflux
